Bought a bottle after seeing it on the news – they showed some nice footage of the factory where they turn the plant into capsules, so I felt confident that it wasn’t fake. I also got a bottle of “Mega Hoodia” by NOW Foods (orange label with purple writing) for comparison.
The “Hoodia Hoodia” is definitely not fake – the capsules positively _reek_ of plant-stuff, like a cross between green tea and saccharin. The stuff inside looks like sawdust and tastes like very bitter grass clippings. I mixed it with some warm water and you can see the tiny green bits of the plant skin.
For comparison, the Mega Hoodia doesn’t smell or taste nearly as strong (though it is similar), and looks like yellow-green talcum powder. I’m less confident that it’s the real thing, but I haven’t tried taking it yet so I can’t be sure.
As far as effects, it does reduce my appetite but took 3-4 capsules to do so instead of the 1 recommended on the label (I weigh about 220 pounds, your mileage may vary). My stomach wasn’t growling near mealtimes and when I did eat I got full after 1/2 to 2/3 or so of my meal. Also, sugary-tasting foods became cloyingly sweet (diet soda was undrinkable). No notable side effects except perhaps insomnia, but I get that fairly often anyway.
Haven’t been using it enough to comment on weight loss, but it does in fact do _something_ – I was expecting it to be yet another bit of marketing hogwash, but there’s at least a grain of truth to it. Keep in mind though that for the price (~$30 a bottle after tax and shipping) you’re only getting maybe 15-20 servings, so it can get rather expensive.
I have a ravinous appetite. Once I start eating – it’s difficult to stop. Portion control means nothing to me. My weight has gotton to the point that I can’t do the things I really enjoy like skiing and hiking.
This product is not a panecea. It doesn’t take away any thought of food for me like it seems to for other people. I find it makes it much easier to plan for meals and eat the right amounts. One thing I discovered – heavier people need more product. It makes sense. So don’t give up if you think it’s not working – try taking more per day and well before the time you eat. The recommended 1 hour is not enough for me. It definitely makes a difference – I’m taking off 3-5 lbs per week.
As for the different types of hoodia, there is only one type of hoodia that I recommend because it is the most effective. That type is pure South African hoodia gordonii POWDER. Hoodia gums, patches, lollipops, etc. etc. are all nothing but gimmicks. Hoodia extracts are also suspect and may not even be possible to make.
